It's that time of year . . . time to open up google and type in "photographer near me". There are many photographers in the Kansas City area. You can find photographers in Lee's Summit, Blue Springs, Olathe, Overland Park, there are many good options. Once you have found a photographer you love, asked them about all their services and booked your fall family session in Kansas City . . . the next thing to think about is what to wear to my family photo session.
When helping a client decide what to wear to their family portrait session I like to suggest they start with the pickiest person first. In my family that's me. (soon to be in competition for this first place role with me will be my daughter, ha!) Since I am very picky and find shopping for clothes to be daunting at times, I start with me. I want to be sure whatever I decide to wear in our family pictures that I feel like I look good, that I feel comfortable in the outfit and that it will gives me room to move around and be in a variety of poses without revealing too much or feeling restrained. The first outfit you pick for the family will set the tone for everyone else's outfits. If I picked a fancy dress then I would find coordinating fancy outfits for my daughter, son and husband . . . and maybe even a necklace and a bow tie for the puppies! You can see here, when my daughter was two and a half, I had one of my very best friends, Melanie Jackel, take our picture for our holiday cards. I thought it would be kind of funny to go over the top even with the dogs.
We choose to wear formal outfits with a color scheme of red, black and white. Using the color combo red, black and white is a classic choice. Below my family picture you can see some of my clients in those colors and how great they look. This is a great choice for holiday picture specifically.
Another great way to decide what the family will wear to their family portrait session is by thinking about what you plan to do with the images after your session. Do you plan to put them on your cloud and never look at them again? Ha ha! I hope not! But just a friendly reminder ... PRINT YOUR PICTURES!
Okay off my soap box. But if you plan to hang the pictures in your home you may want to pick a color scheme that would coordinate in your home. Our home has a lot of blue accents. Do you decorate your home in blues? Here are some great options for coordinating in blues. Now remember not to go matchy-matchy with your outfits. Let everyone have their own style and look, while keeping within a color scheme.
My third suggestion would be to pick 3 (or some where around 2-4 colors) colors and coordinate the family in those. Trying to have everyone wearing a bit of each color. This family below did an excellent job carrying the colors brown, white and blue through out their wardrobes.
Here is another great example. Elizabeth coordinated her family in lavender, white and blues with a pop of coral. Great, fun look!
No matter what you decide to wear I hope you go into your photo session with a good attitude, ready for some fun and silly times! Happy planning!
