Hello my local Kansas City Family! Summer is almost over and fall is before us. It's time to start planning your family portraits! Besides finding time in everyones busy schedule the hardest thing about family portraits is determining what everyone will wear. I know I personally have struggled with this very topic when planning my own family portraits. And if you are planning extended family portraits the challenge can be even tougher. Trying to find something that coordinates, fits and everyone feels good is in a huge challenge. But let me ease your frustration with a few tips and a few visuals to get your brain storming juices flowing.
My family often wears blues. Pink is actually my favorite color, but getting my husband and son to wear pink? I don't think so! Ha ha! (Side note: I actually did get to wear pink a couple years ago - see here!) My second favorite color is blue and my husband's favorite color is blue, so we both have a ton of it in our closets and when shopping my eyes are drawn to blue. Most of the times we've planned family portraits I didn't even have to buy him something new! Such a time saver, money saver and stress saver!
So when planning your family portraits I personally always suggest picking your own outfit out first. We are all our own worst critics, so finding something that we feel comfortable and confident in is key. And if you have stipulations when searching and shopping at your favorite local Kansas City stores it makes it that much harder. So find something for yourself first. Once you have found something you feel fabulous in, you have a great starting point for everyone else's outfits. Did you pick something more dressy? Great! Now you know to look for dressier things for the rest of the family. Did you find some cute jeans and a comfy sweater? Great! Now you can look for something comfortable and cozy for the rest of the family.
Here are two examples of great coordination done by these two families. While they are very different in choice, they are both excellent! The first family went bold and classy while the second went fun and casual! Both OUTSTANDING!
Now back to color. There are a few things to consider when you decide what colors you'd like everyone to wear ... what are you planning to do with your pictures? Will they go on a holiday card? Do you want everyone in Christmas colors? Will the images you take in you home town go up on your walls? If so maybe you want to use colors that coordinate with your walls and decor. Here are a few images where the families really nailed the color coordination.
When searching for a local family photographer near you and while hunting for the perfect outfits for your favorite people; remember to let your personalities shine through too! I hope to see you this fall!
