We got a new puppy yesterday! This was a shock to everyone I think. We lost our dog, Hank at the beginning of summer (2018) and it was a devastating loss. Before we got Hank, we had our dog Ava. Since we got Hank after Ava I always assumed Ava would be first to go to doggie heaven. Hank had diabetes and we did not know that. He got very sick over a 3 day weekend. Hind sight ... we should have taken him to the emergency vet.
Before Hank passed, my husband would always say that once the two dogs we have die we will not get more. He loved our two dogs, but dogs are a lot of work. So it was to my surprise when we were all at Petco getting worms for our turtle and looking at the dogs up for adoption, my husband asked, "You didn't see one you wanted?". I was in shock .. what was he talking about? Did he want me to want one of those dogs?? Once he gave the okay to get another dog I was on the hunt!
I came across what was stated as a schnauzer on line at Wayside Waifs. (My first dog as a child was a miniature schnauzer we named Scottie. He was such a great dog!) We knew a schnauzer would go quickly so the very next day I showed up about 20 minutes before they opened. When I got there her sign said, "Mocha (her name) and Schnauzer Mix". She was a sweet little thing. All the other dogs were barking as I walked up and down the isles. Not her, she just sat up and looked at me. Once I stopped at her pin she politely whimpered at me to please let her out so we could play. Once the staff there allowed that to happen, I got to know her a bit. She is playful, timid at times and just a little sweetheart. When I went to go over everything I needed to adopt her, I saw her papers said she was scottish terrier mix. I think that might be more accurate than schnauzer. But whatever she is, she's now ours! We named her Sadie. We are on day two and things are going smoothly so far. Our daughter is over the moon and our son is slowly warming up. Ava likes having a new playmate too!
Today we've been steadily working on potty training. Yesterday she had about 3 accidents, but today we are on top of it and haven't had a mishap. She's already learned to sit too! I am excited to see how this journey continues. It will be even more fun when the weather is nice and we can play with everyone in the backyard.
Yesterday Wayside Waifs said they were going to get a bunch of new dogs in very soon, so if you are thinking you might want to add a little furry family member to your household go check it out. But of course remember pets are a lot of work and take time and patience.
