"The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it." - Robert Swan
I love shooting Branding Photography for business clients! Recently I had the opportunity to photograph an awesome salon in Leavenworth, Kansas, just northwest of Kansas City. On my way, I drive through the cute downtown area; it was picture perfect! The whole area is quaint, beautiful, historic and full of personality; no big box stores in sight. I pulled up to the salon on South 5th Street and was greeted by the sweetest, most laid back, green stylist, Sammy Klinger.
Sammy is 28 and owns Vol Libre Salon, along with that she has 4 little ones at home. She has an amazing outlook on life and is so excited for her new adventure. Sammy opened Vol Libre Salon in 2013, but in April of this past year she moved to her new location at 209 S. 5th Street in the AXA building a gem of a historic property. The new location has added chairs so that she can expand her business. As you walk in you feel quite at home, with the cozy sitting area, the live plants and even a little coffee bar. Sammy is transitioning her salon into an eco friendly atmosphere. This includes buying used items for everything from decor, rinse sinks and more. Giving them more life and saving them from being dumped in landfills. At Vol Libre Salon they reuse as many items as possible reducing the single use cycle with things such as glass drinking cups, reusable mesh foil alternatives and hand dryer instead of paper towels in the bathroom just to name a few. Anything that cannot be bought to reuse, such as product containers and packages, they recycle. Their mission is to use environmentally conscious products and provide great salon services that have less of an impact on the environment and landfills. Vol Libre donates all used color tubes and other plastic beauty packages to Dragon Master Foundation who uses these products to research childhood cancers. They donate hair clippings to a local farmer and when the need occurs also donate to Matter of Trust an organization that helps clean up oil spills, they donate other plastics, aluminum, and glass through standard recycling methods.
Sammy named her salon Vol Libre, which means Free Flight in French. When asked why she chose this beautiful name she said, "I chose this name because of a very special tattoo on my chest of a bird cage and a bird that represented a huge change in my life when I was 18, opening this salon was another huge change of freedom and flying on my own."
I truly enjoyed photographing Sammy as she was up for anything, and excited to have professional images for her website and social media posts. Sammy has future plans to do some remodeling to her salon, allowing her to restore her space to its original beauty and to make it the perfect place for her clients to come into an atmosphere that is a haven of support and to let their daily stresses be put to the side.
