It's that time of year again, time to search the web for "photographer near me" and find that perfect fit. Once you've booked your photographer you will need to figure out what to wear. This may be the most challenging part of the family portrait process. Hunting store after store for just the right thing for everyone after you bought the cutest little dress for your daughter. Yes it was cute and her favorite color, yellow, but now none of the stores are carrying yellow in any other outfits for the rest of the family. Yes I've been there!
I always recommend to my clients that they start by picking out an outfit for themselves first. We are all most critical of ourselves, so finding that outfit that you love, feel comfortable in and that fits is important to making the shoot a success (so many other factors make it a success too ... timing, photographer, location, have the kids been fed, scheduling the family photography session when it's not nap time, etc). I personally lean towards jeans, boots and a sweater for fall portraits and for spring maybe a cute dress.
Another thing I suggest to my clients when looking for outfits for the whole family is to pick 3-4 colors and try to keep the whole family coordinating within those colors. Not too matchy-matchy (not everyone wearing the same shirt and bottoms), but more coordinating, so that everyone can wear their own style but keeping the color scheme to those 3-4 colors; tying it all together.
Here are some great ideas for coordinating fall family outfits!
