Selfies … a great way to document yourself and your life! A great way to post on social media about a fun adventure you've had around the KC Metro area or getting to see a long time friend you don't see often. Here are 5 tips to make that selfie count!
Step #1 … Find the Light … Have you been to the Kauffman Performing Arts Center during the golden hour? The light inside is just gorgeous. My daughter had been wanting to see the nutcracker for years. This past December we finally went and she loved it. But what I loved … ha! … being a photographer … was the gorgeous light on the inside of before you get to the auditorium. With everything also being white and bright inside the Kauffman Performing Arts Center, it allowed the soft evening sunlight to bounce everywhere like a large soft box. So step one to taking a perfect selfie … take your selfie next to a window. North windows are the best when taking a selfie during the middle of the day as you get indirect sunlight. Indirect sunlight is gorgeous because it is a softer light leaving you with softer shadows that are less defined.
Tip #2 … Not all images have to be vertical! Don't be afraid to go horizontal! Taking a horizontal selfie is a great way to fit in more people and fit in more scenery to show where you were when you took the selfie. Check out The Plaza Skyline here in this selfie of me and one of my best friends!
Step #3 … Take multiple images. I always like to take 2-3 images even when I'm using my cell phone. You never know if someone may blink. So by taking multiple you can take the selfie quickly and get on with life and look at what you got later! Here's a family selfie below. I love getting out in that first big snow with the kids. So I made them document it with me, ha, even though they were ready to get back on the sleds. In our rush, someone blinked in at least one and a couple of the images someone wasn't looking into the camera. Thank goodness I took a few because I love how this one turned out!
Step #4 … learn to use your timer! Utilizing the timer on your phone camera allows you to set the phone down and step back. You can showcase more of the scene and fit in more friends! Here's a selfie of me and my bestie again enjoying a birthday lunch at Parlor - the sign was too cute to pass up (Yassss GURL!) Parlor has so many different options, it was fun to try new things there! And here is a selfie of my ReFit class showing our support for the KC Chiefs back in January. (Yes that's me in blue, lol, Royals was as close as I had in my closet. Darn! But go Chiefs!!) Not sure how to use your time on your phone? Here's a YouTube Video! I love YouTube! You can learn so much!!
Step #5 to taking the Perfect Selfie … Have fun with it! Do worry too much about being perfect. Imperfection is perfect in it's own way! Just be sure to take those selfies! Whether you are with friends, family, small group, or working out, document the things and moments you are loving! Here's a selfie of my dad and I on lunch date (we went for cookies after lunch to Mary's Mountain Cookies on Main Street in Belton, MO. So YUMMY!)
While I believe scheduling family portraits is very important, I also agree selfies have their place as well! Capture those memories by booking a portrait session with me, by taking selfies of you and your friends, and by snapping phone pics of your family during everyday events!
