Katy and I spoke on the phone to hash out the details of her family portrait session. She needed some location ideas so I emailed her some sample images from a few of my top places I love to photograph families in Kansas City. I find this easier than trying explain over the phone. Kansas City has so many great spots!! It's really just personal preference. We spoke early in the summer, but with my travel plans and her five (yes FIVE) busy, beautiful daughters she found a date in August that worked for everyone and I put it on my calendar. After reviewing location options, Katy decided on The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art. (GREAT choice Katy!!)
We picked an evening during the week. This is usually best to avoid crowds. I arrived a few minutes early so I could check in with the security office at the museum. It was a perfect evening, the Kansas City summer weather had let up a tad bit and there were only a handful of people at the museum. Funny enough, about 10 minutes later about 300 dancers showed up. Apparently we picked the same night a huge Kansas City dance troop had picked for pictures. It was PACKED! Thank goodness for us, they wanted lots of group shots in one location. So we practically had the rest of the place to ourselves.
We started out by taking pictures at the columns on the south side of the museum. After that we did a few more on the south lawn and then headed to the north side. By this time the golden hour was full on GORGEOUS!! We got some beautifully soft lit portraits to finish out the awesome session!
Now most client's biggest question is "What to wear to our family portraits". Katy and family came dressed to impress! They were PERFECTLY coordinated! I don't know how she did it! Seven family members and they all looked SO good together (a photographer's dream)!! Great job Katy! And it didn't hurt that everyone in the family could go into modeling. They are all beautiful!!! Check it out!
